Historic Hackettstown may seem an unlikely venue for a top-drawer creative Italian trattoria, but this comeback city has a burgeoning scene nestled on Main Street in the homey, popular Cara Mia Café. This unpretentious restaurant, – located in what was once Hackettstown’s post office, -has only 14 tables, but unbeatable word of mouth. Chef Tommaso Wohlrob’s eclectic pan-Italian cuisine and wife / manager Gigi Wohlrob’s hospitality have kept those tables packed with a growing roster of regulars. Daily specials keep things fresh, but the everyday menu is anything but everyday: a classic pasta with bolognese sauce shares space with a French – accented Filet Mignon Diane and the knockout Brazilian Lobster Tails don Tommaso, which feature tender tails and Wohlrob’s signature ultra-light cream and arugula sauce.
