TOPS Produce

At TOPS, we're produce people. From the moment a seed is planted, we're on a journey with our produce. We carefully select innovative growers as our partners but it doesn't end there. Our own produce experts ensure your produce is picked at the perfect moment, transported with utmost care and constant monitoring, and then is rigorously inspected to meet our high standards.

From planting to picking and inspecting to selecting, we do all of this to ensure the very best for your family. At TOPS, if it grows, our love for it shows. And we want you to join us and share in our passion for freshness.

There's No Place Like Homegrown

During local produce season, TOPS is proud to work with over 200 local growers. Some of these partners are family farms that have been growing for generations, and many have been part of the TOPS family for decades.

Quick Tips & Tricks

When it comes to keeping fruits and vegetables fresh for as long as possible, proper storage is the key. If you find your produce doesn't keep as long as you'd like, you may be storing incompatible fruits and veggies together. Some produce gives off ethylene gas, a ripening agent that will affect foods sensitive to it. So, simply follow the tips below to avoid storing foods together that promote rapid ripening.

  • Apples
  • Apricots
  • Cantaloupe
  • Figs
  • Honeydew

All of these fruits release ethylene gas at room temperature, so refrigerating slows the release and helps them keep longer. Still, you should not store these with ethylene-sensitive foods (found below).

    Don't Refrigerate:

  • Avocados
  • Bananas, unripe
  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Plums
  • Tomatoes

These fruits also release ethylene gas but they need to be stored in an environment where they can "breathe" to preserve them.

Ethylene-sensitive foods; keep these away from the above two groups:

  • Bananas, ripe
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Cucumbers
  • Eggplant
  • Lettuce and other leafy greens
  • Parsley
  • Peas
  • Peppers
  • Squash
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Watermelon

These items are very sensitive to the ethylene gas released from the first two groups of produce. Keep them in separate containers.
